The Data Entry Problem
If your firm runs on Clio, you know the drill. Every status change, every hearing date, every new document in the ERE needs to make its way into Clio. Manually. Case by case.
Your staff has to:
- Log into the ERE to check for updates
- Copy status changes into the corresponding Clio matter
- Enter hearing dates and calendar events by hand
- Download documents and re-upload them into Clio
For firms managing dozens to hundreds of cases, this manual transfer is constant. Your case management system ends up lagging behind reality because someone hasn’t gotten to the data entry yet.
The problem isn’t Clio. Clio is where your firm operates. The problem is getting ERE data into Clio without requiring your staff to be the middleman.
A New Approach: Chronicle + Clio
Chronicle now syncs ERE data directly into Clio through a native API integration. Case status, hearing dates, and documents flow in automatically. No manual entry. No Zapier. No extra cost.
Chronicle handles the ERE monitoring. It checks the SSA portal for changes across your firm’s caseload and detects new statuses, hearing dates, and documents as they appear.
Clio receives that data automatically. When your staff opens a matter in Clio, the latest ERE information is already there. They don’t need to toggle between systems or copy anything by hand.
“This integration is about keeping your case management system accurate without asking your staff to do the work. Chronicle handles the ERE so your team can focus on the cases themselves.”
— Nikhil Pai, Founder of Chronicle
“Chronicle has become an integral piece of my business operations — to the point that I simply could not run my company without it. Beyond the core functionality, the integrations and the consistent willingness to communicate, adapt, and improve the platform have driven meaningful, foundational improvements across our workflows.
The new Clio integration — automatically syncing documents from ERE — gives me confidence that everything is captured and organized without extra work. It’s rare to find a product and leadership team so aligned with the needs of its users, and I look forward to continuing to grow alongside Chronicle in the future.”
— Travis McCracken, Golson, McCracken Inc.
How the Chronicle + Clio Integration Works
The setup takes a few minutes if you have Clio admin access. Our team provides white-glove support if you want a hand.
Step 1: Connect Your Clio Account
Go to your Chronicle settings, navigate to the Integrations tab, and select Clio. Authenticate your admin account and you’ll see the connection status go green.

Step 2: Configure the Sync
Select your Clio practice area (Disability / Social Security) and configure how Chronicle finds clients by mapping your SSN custom field.

Step 3: Match Clients
Chronicle matches your ERE clients to Clio contacts using last name and last four of SSN. The client matching screen shows your match progress and flags any records that need manual review.

Step 4: Map Matter Stages
Configure which Clio matter stage a case should be in based on its Chronicle status. For example, map “Scheduled Hearing” to your Hearing Level stage, or “Open” to Initial Phase.

Step 5: Map Fields
Choose which Chronicle data fields sync to which Clio fields. Map dates like Status Date and Hearing Scheduled Date to your corresponding Clio custom fields.

Step 6: Enable Document Sync
Turn on document sync to automatically pull ERE documents into Clio. When enabled, documents downloaded from the ERE sync to Clio every 15 minutes. Use the Backfill Documents button to pull in historical documents for existing cases.

Step 7: Confirm It’s Working
The sync history log shows every sync with status, record counts, and duration. You can trigger a manual resync at any time.

What syncs: Case status (ERE level, decisions, milestones), hearing dates (as calendar events), and documents (evidence and notices from the ERE).
Current limitations: The integration does not currently sync consultative exams, SSA information requests, or medical requests. These are on the roadmap.
Why Native Beats Zapier
Before this integration, the closest option was wiring up a Zapier connection to get ERE data into Clio. That approach works, but it comes with trade-offs:
- Custom setup required. Zapier integrations need configuration and testing. If something breaks, you’re troubleshooting a third-party connector.
- Accuracy concerns. Data passing through middleware can get lost or malformed. A native API connection is more reliable.
- Extra cost. Zapier isn’t free. Chronicle’s native integration is included with your Pro plan.
- Maintenance overhead. Zapier connections can break silently. A native integration is maintained by the teams that built it.
Chronicle’s native integration eliminates the middleman entirely.
What This Unlocks in Clio
Here’s what firms tend to miss about CMS integrations: the real value isn’t just the time saved on data entry. It’s what becomes possible once your data is consistently in Clio.
Having accurate, up-to-date ERE data in Clio enables:
- Clio’s AI features work better with richer, more current data
- Automated workflows triggered by status changes or hearing dates
- Reporting and dashboards that reflect the actual state of your caseload
- Fewer surprises when a team member pulls up a case and the information is already there
The integration is a force multiplier. It doesn’t just save time on data entry; it makes everything downstream in Clio more reliable.
