Understanding Comparisons

What the Numbers Mean

Approval Rate: Percentage of decisions that are fully or partially favorable to claimants.

Denial Rate: Percentage of decisions that are unfavorable.

Fully Favorable: Percentage of awards that grant full benefits from the alleged onset date.

Total Decisions: Number of cases decided in the fiscal year.

Important Caveats

Historical statistics don't predict individual outcomes. Each case is decided on its own merits.

Judges with different caseloads or case types may not be directly comparable. Volume matters—a judge with fewer cases may show more variance.

See our methodology page for data sources and calculation details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many judges can I compare at once?
You can compare 2-4 judges at the same time. Search for judges by name or office location, then select them to add to your comparison. Remove any judge by clicking the × button on their pill.
What metrics are shown in the comparison?
The comparison shows approval rate, denial rate, fully favorable rate, total decisions, total dispositions, and the judge's hearing office. Metrics are highlighted to show which judge has the highest or lowest values. A national average column provides additional context.
How should I interpret these comparisons?
Comparisons provide useful context but don't predict individual case outcomes. Judges with similar offices may handle similar case types, making office-based comparisons more meaningful. However, every case is decided on its own merits based on the specific evidence presented. See our methodology page for more details.
Can I save or share a comparison?
Currently, comparisons are not saved between sessions. A future update will add the ability to share comparisons via URL. For now, you can take a screenshot of your comparison to save it.
Why don't I see certain judges?
Judges with fewer than 50 total decisions in FY 2025 are not included in the comparison tool to ensure statistical significance. You can still view all judges on the judges index page.
